Pilates
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a very popular and effective form of exercise that provides a wealth of physical, mental and spiritual benefits. Pilates is practiced worldwide by people from all walks of life, including dancers, elite athletes, fitness enthusiasts and those with symptoms of pain, especially back pain.
Typically, Pilates is performed on a mat usually using only body weight as the 'load' or 'resistance'. However, at times small and portable equipment like stability balls, foam rollers, resistance bands and more are used alongside the mat exercises to create additional resistance/increase the intensity of the exercise.
How can Pilates help me?
Pilates can often be an effective way for people with musculoskeletal disorders, especially low back pain, to correct the source of their dysfunction and remove the triggers causing pain. So much so that many doctors, physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors frequently refer patients to Pilates teachers for rehabilitation and/or therapeutic exercise.

Pilates seeks to develop and strengthen the whole body which is why pilates is often referred to as a 'holistic' form of exercise. This balanced approach to lengthening and strengthening muscles restores the length-tension relationship in key groups of muscles, so that their optimal function can be restored and quality of life improved.

The benefits to Pilates exercises are plentiful, including;
